Short item description

Japan, c. 1887 (around Meiji 20)

This striking triptych was designed by the prominent Meiji-era artist Yōshū Chikanobu (1838–1912). The scene depicts the Emperor, dressed in a Western-style military uniform, during a formal visit to the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo. He is surrounded by a large retinue of court ladies clad in traditional, richly patterned kimonos, creating a visual contrast between Japanese tradition and Western modernization that is highly characteristic of the Meiji era. The background features the shrine's architecture with a torii gate, cherry blossoms, and a European-style fountain in the left panel. This specific impression is noted for its good printing quality and overall good condition.
