| Short item description From the celebrated series Edo meisho hyakunin bijo (One Hundred Beauties of Famous Places in Edo), in which Kunisada combined depictions of elegant women with well-known locations in Edo. Each print features a female portrait in the foreground and a smaller inset scene (cartouche) showing the corresponding site – here the entrance gate to the Yoshiwara pleasure quarter lined with blossoming cherry trees. The depicted courtesan sits dressed in an elaborately patterned kimono adorned with fans and stylised crests, reading a love letter while her attendant adjusts her hairstyle. Kunisada masterfully unites a tranquil, intimate moment with refined pictorial elegance and a sense of decorative rhythm. The series ranks among the highlights of his late career, noted for its superb printing quality and subtle gradations of colour. | |
