2 Sukenobu Nishikawa 1671 – 1750 Woman with Incense Utensil

A refined monochrome illustration from Ehon tokiwa gusa (Picture-book of Evergreens), published in Kyoto in 1731. The second volume, from which this sheet originates, depicts courtesans engaged in quiet daily activities and elegant amusements later echoed in color prints (nishiki-e) by artists such as Suzuki Harunobu.

Here, a young woman sits gracefully on the veranda, holding a small incense utensil—perhaps used to handle charcoal or prepare incense for the kō-awase game. The restrained line work and calm composition embody Sukenobu’s signature poise, balance, and intimate observation of feminine grace.
