A delicate print depicting a young woman seated in a pensive pose, her arms crossed, wearing a pale blue kimono decorated with cherry blossoms. The black obi sash bears a partially illegible inscription. The circular cartouche portrays a high-ranking geisha with her young attendant (kamuro), inscribed “Nigatsu – Second Month.” The title Taka keshite hato tte naru (“The Hawk Ultimately Becomes a Dove”) symbolizes the refinement or transformation of spirit, one of the allegorical themes of the series. In the upper right corner appears a calligraphic haiku, faintly legible, referring to spring rain.
This print belongs to Kunisada’s early period, when the artist masterfully combined bijin-ga portraiture with poetic and symbolic allusions.
