Short item description

from the series Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Road (Tōkaidō gojūsan tsugi no uchi)
publisher: Tsujiokaya Bunsuke (Kinshōdō)

The renowned kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjūrō VIII (1823–1854) is portrayed as Hayano Kanpei, one of the forty-seven rōnin from the celebrated Chūshingura tale. The setting corresponds to the post station Totsuka, where a tranquil landscape with a river and travelers unfolds beneath the setting sun. Kunisada masterfully balances the actor’s expressive gesture with the lyrical atmosphere of the scene, achieving a synthesis of realism and theatrical pathos typical of his late period.
