| Short item description An elegant portrait of the celebrated courtesan Yosoi of the Matsubaya house in the Shin-Yoshiwara pleasure district. The cartouche includes the names of her two young attendants (kamuro), Nioi and Yameki, along with the promotional subtitle zen mori kurabe (“Contest of Beauties in Full Bloom”), commonly used in these representative bijin-ga. Richly patterned layers of kimono, an intricate coiffure adorned with hairpins, and a softly shaded background reveal Kuniyasu — a younger contemporary of Kunisada from the Utagawa school — as a refined chronicler of the height of Yoshiwara elegance. | |
