Short item description

publisher: Hoeido (Tsutaya Juzaburo)

One of the most celebrated designs from Hiroshige’s Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido series (Tokaido gojusan tsugi no uchi), depicting a sudden downpour at Shono station. Villagers and porters hurry along the road, huddled under straw raincoats and bamboo hats, as slanting sheets of rain sweep across the landscape in rhythmic diagonals. Hiroshige captures with remarkable sensitivity the essence of motion, atmosphere, and natural drama, transforming a fleeting shower into an image of timeless poetic intensity.

This later impression, printed from the original blocks, retains the full compositional strength and lyrical mood of the original Hoeido edition.
