Oil on canvas. This painting depicts the adoration of the infant Jesus in the manger. Three kings came to worship him, each of which brought gifts as an expression of respect. The scene takes place partly indoors (decaying barn with hay) and partly outdoors, where a procession of people is arriving. Lighting effects emphasise the earthly trinity – Jesus, Mary and Joseph. From the sky, light falls from the comet that marks the birthplace of the Messiah. This divine light is accentuated by flying cherubs. The central scene is complemented with a crowd of servants presenting various gifts. Horses and dogs run among them, and the procession gradually fades in to the darkness of the background In addition to the ox and the ass, there are also chickens and lambs, as well as exotic animals such as parrots and a camel. The composition and colour range points to inspiration in the style of Jacopo and Francesco Bassano. The painting is of extremely high quality and outstanding narrative power.
