Abraham van Dyck was a student of Rembrandt and excelled in depicting portraits. This impressive portrait of a praying or meditating woman with an open book on her lap refers to the influence of the artist Nicolaes Maes. The background is dark and neutral, and the figure emerges from it easily and naturally. The woman has pronounced wrinkles and tired eyes. A richly decorated crimson cloak with a simple hood drapes over her head and body. The colors are harmonious and the use of light and dark tones is finely executed.
