Short item description
Japan, 1893 and 1903 (Meiji period)
This lot offers a pair of charming genre scenes by Toyohara Chikanobu, a leading Meiji-era master. Both sheets originate from his renowned series Edo Nishiki (Edo Brocades), in which the artist focused on illustrating the typical customs and elegant activities of upper-class ladies. The first print, published in 1903 and titled "Dressing Up", takes us indoors where one lady adjusts her hairstyle in front of a mirror while another brings a teapot. The second sheet, dated 1893, depicts an outdoor scene featuring a noblewoman in a magnificently decorated black kimono, accompanied by a group of respectfully bowing attendants in the background. Both prints utilize the less common horizontal format and feature fine printing quality and good colors.
