Short item description

Japan, 1893 and 1894 (Meiji period)

This lot offers a pair of historicizing genre scenes by the esteemed Meiji-era artist, Mizuno Toshikata. Both sheets originate from his renowned series Sanjurokkasen (Selection of Thirty-six Beauties / Thirty-six Elegant Selections), published by Akiyama Buemon. The project served as a visual guide to the history of Japanese women's fashion and customs. The first print, dated 1893, is titled "Moon-viewing - Woman of around Ancient Times" (Chogetsu - Jodai koro fujin) and depicts a young woman in ancient attire standing by a stream beneath a full moon. The second sheet, dated 1894, is titled "The Sound of Insects: Woman of the Kan'en Era" (Mushi no ne, Kan'en goro fujin) and illustrates the fashion style of the mid-18th century (1748–1751). Regarding condition, it must be noted that both sheets exhibit visible tape residue and minor paper damage along the top margins.
