This beautiful woodblock print was designed by Utagawa Kunisada I, also known as Toyokuni III. It is a classic portrait of a beauty (bijinga) representing the Eighth Month (Hazuki) from the series "Twelve Months" (Jūni tsuki no uchi). The elegant woman stands on a veranda under a full moon, wearing a luxurious kimono richly decorated with large peony blossoms, and holds a blue folding fan. In the upper right corner, a fan-shaped cartouche displays a goose flying across the night sky. A traditional smoking set (tabako-bon) rests on the floor beside her. The print bears the censor seals (Fuku, Muramatsu, and Rat 6, precisely dating it to 1852) alongside the seal of the publisher, Yamadaya Shōjirō. The artist's signature, "Toyokuni ga," is placed within his distinctive toshidama cartouche in the lower-left corner. An impression of this exact print is held in the prestigious collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
