Short item description

Japan, first published 1834/35 (later printings up to 1880)

This lot offers a wonderful opportunity to acquire two illustrated book pages by the legendary Katsushika Hokusai. Both originate from the renowned Volume 2 of the masterpiece "One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji" (Fugaku hyakkei), widely considered a pinnacle of Japanese printmaking. The left scene, depicting people gathering brushwood, is titled "Fuji in a Valley". The right page, titled "Fuji inside the sake cup", presents a classic Hokusai visual pun, where the sacred mountain is reflected (or formed) inside the cup of a smiling man resting under a pine tree. While the first edition of this volume was published in 1834/35, the presented examples may originate from later 19th-century editions, which were frequently handled by the publisher Eirakuya Toshiro.
