Short item description

Japan, 1920s–1930s (after an original design from c. 1830–31),
from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei)

This highly atmospheric sheet features another iconic design by the celebrated master Katsushika Hokusai. It originates from his world-renowned series "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji". The scene depicts the "Jewel River" (Tamagawa) in Musashi Province, showing a ferry boat crossing the waters and people working along the banks, while Mount Fuji looms over the distant horizon. The original edition of this design was published by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudō) around 1830–1831 and featured no censor's seal. The present work is a high-quality, newly carved master reproduction (fukukoku) from the interwar period, strikingly executed in the aizuri-e (blue printed picture) style. The fact that this print shares the exceptional provenance of the Czech painter Vojtěch Chytil makes it a highly sought-after collector's item with a fascinating Central European history.
