81 Katsushika Hokusai 1760 – 1849 Tsukuda-jima in Musashi Province

This remarkably elegant woodblock print features one of the iconic designs by the celebrated master Katsushika Hokusai. It originates from his world-renowned series "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji". The scene depicts Tsukuda island (Tsukuda-jima) surrounded by various fishing and cargo boats, with the snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji rising majestically on the horizon. The original edition of this design was published by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudō) around 1830–1831. However, the present work is a high-quality, newly carved master reproduction (fukukoku) dating to the interwar period (1920s–1930s). Furthermore, the print is intentionally and strikingly executed in the aizuri-e (literally "blue printed picture") style, utilizing a nuanced scale of indigo and Prussian blue tones. It was exactly these highly crafted modern editions that the Czech painter Vojtěch Chytil imported directly from Japan to Central Europe during the 1920s and 30s.
