Color woodblock print (nishiki-e)

Short item description

Japan, 1st half of the 19th century

Based on stylistic elements, this fascinating print—capturing one of the most popular summer events in old Edo, the fireworks over the Sumida River—is attributed to the circle of pupils of the great master Kitagawa Utamaro. The Ryogoku Bridge in the background is packed with crowds of spectators illuminated by bursting fireworks, while the foreground is dominated by a bustling river scene. We see traditional pleasure boats (yakatabune) filled with reveling guests alongside smaller skiffs where vendors offer refreshments. The elegance of the female figures in the foreground strongly reflects the influence of the Utamaro school. Over the centuries, the print has acquired a charming monochromatic, sepia patina, lending it an extraordinarily nostalgic atmosphere and attesting to its authentic Edo-period age.
