Giacomo Francesco Cipper, known as Il Todeschini, was of Austrian origin, but worked mainly in Milan. His favorite themes included various genre scenes of marketplaces and inns, craftsmen at work and people playing various musical instruments. The theme of this painting is a game of cards. The scene takes place outdoors under the branches of a tree. The two players are concentrating on the game, observed by an old man with a pipe. The sky is dark and the whole scene is overlooked by a bystanding dog.
