46 Toyohara Kunichika 1835 – 1900 Devoted Father with Child in the Snow

This print from the series Baikō hyakushu no uchi (“One Hundred Roles of Onoe Baikō”) depicts the celebrated actor Onoe Baikō IV (1844–1903) as a devoted father shielding his child from falling snow beneath an umbrella. In the upper cartouche appears Ichikawa Sadanji I (1842–1904) as a rickshaw puller, creating a poignant contrast between paternal tenderness and the bustle of urban life. The series honors Baikō’s versatility and emotional depth as an actor.

Kunichika combines subtle psychological insight, delicate winter hues, and a dynamic diagonal composition, capturing the poetic stillness of a snowy evening.
