Short item description

from the series The Eighteen Kabuki Plays (Kabuki juhachiban)
published by Hasegawa Sumi, 1896

The print depicts Ichikawa Danjūrō IX (1838–1903) in the role of Teruhi no Kamiko from the play Uwanari (Jealousy). The lower figure represents an unidentified actor as Kisho. The names of the actor and role appear below the mimasu-mon (“three rice measures”) crest of the Ichikawa family.

The series Kabuki juhachiban (“The Eighteen Kabuki Plays”) was inspired by a selection of eighteen notable kabuki dramas compiled in 1840 by Ichikawa Danjūrō VII (1791–1859), representing the key repertoire of the Ichikawa acting dynasty. This series was designed by Torii Kiyotada IV (Tadakiyo) after sketches by his father Torii Kiyosada (1844–1901).
