36 Imao Keinen 1845 – 1924 Sparrows on Snow-Covered Bamboo

This delicate and masterfully executed sheet is the work of one of the greatest Meiji-era masters of the kachō-ga (bird-and-flower picture) genre, Imao Keinen. The scene captures two fluffed-up sparrows huddling together on a bamboo branch that bends heavily under a thick layer of fresh snow. The inscription in the lower-left corner precisely dates the image to a "spring day of the Wood Dragon year", corresponding to 1904, and concludes with the signature "Drawn by Keinen", accompanied by two of the artist's red seals. Keinen's style was deeply rooted in the precise observation of nature and the traditional Shijō school of painting. The print excels in its incredibly subtle color palette and flawless gradation, perfectly evoking a cold and quiet winter atmosphere. While more commercial prints often recycled motifs, this dated sheet by Keinen represents a highly intimate and authorial example of Japanese nature lyricism from the turn of the 20th century.
