Wu Guanzhong, born in 1919 in Jiangsu Province, moved among the internationally best known Chinese painters during the 1980s. He originally studied oil painting in Hangzhou. After the outbreak of war, he escaped from the Japanese-occupied territory, and eventually taught at the State Art Academy in Chongqing. In 1947 he received a scholarship and studied at the École supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris. He returned to China in 1950, and taught at the Central Academy of Arts and at Qinghua University. |
