Sōzan, known for his elegant bird-and-flower compositions for the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō, skillfully blended natural observation with refined stylization. After the Great Kantō Earthquake of 1923, Ohara Koson succeeded Sōzan as Watanabe’s principal kachō-ga artist, though some of Sōzan’s earlier designs were recarved and reissued during the 1930s.
