66 Torii Kiyotada III 1862 – 1938 Kabuki Program Welcoming Dr. Robert Koch (The Soga Brothers' Night Attack)

This exceptionally rare and historically significant woodblock print is a commemorative theatrical program (banzuke) that bridges the worlds of traditional Japanese theater and international medical history. The calligraphic text on the left (written in the kanteiryū script) explicitly states that this is a "Kabuki Performance Program Welcoming Mr. Koch, hosted by the Joint Medical Associations." The guest of honor was the renowned German bacteriologist and Nobel laureate Dr. Robert Koch, who visited Japan in 1908 at the invitation of Shibasaburo Kitasato. The program lists the acts performed: 1. Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees, 2. The Soga Brothers' Night Attack at the Dawn Hunting Ground, 3. Two Maidens at Dōjōji Temple, and a finale titled The Flower of the Kabuki Country. The illustration on the right, designed by Torii Kiyotada III (a master of the Torii lineage, which held a traditional monopoly on kabuki promotional art), visualizes the second act of the program. It depicts the Soga brothers, Jūrō and Gorō, gripping burning torches and drawn swords as they launch their legendary night attack on the shogun's camp to avenge their father's death
